Today is World AIDS Day. 33 million people are living with the disease. The number of new cases is down, but more women and younger people are becoming infected. Designer Kenneth Cole, a longtime activist, was the very first to promote AIDS awareness in ads that have helped shatter the silence about the virus around the world. Our Alina Cho recently spent the day with him in this AM original report. Related: amfAR.org November 17, 2009

When it comes to health care reform Democrats and Republicans don't seem to agree on much. One thing they do agree on is making a new system more affordable. While Americans wait for Washington's health care overhaul, prescription drug prices are rising faster than they have in years, and it's calling into question the drug industry's promised "partnership" on reform. CNN's Alina Cho reports. November 3, 2009

With a shortage of the H1N1 vaccine, some local health officials are being forced to act as vaccine police. Health officials in Los Angeles County feel they need to question the masses of people waiting in line at public clinics to ascertain if patients have a real need for the vaccine. Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of public health for Los Angeles County, is the county’s top public health official, and has worked those vaccine lines. He spoke to Alina Cho on CNN’s “American Morning” Thursday. Below is an edited transcript of that interview. Alina Cho: Before we get to what's happening on the ground there, I want to remind our viewers – and some people may not know – you're vaccinating people on what's being called a priority list right now. Remind everybody, who should be standing in line to get the vaccine right now and who should wait. Jonathan Fielding: Yes, the ones who should be in the priority groups are pregnant women or anybody caring for a child under six months of age, health care workers, emergency medical service workers, children and young adults from 6 months up through 24 years, and those 25 to 64 who have underlying conditions that would put them at higher risks for the complications of this H1N1 novel strain. Shorter summer breaks... 9-hour school days... Kids may hate it, but President Obama argues American students are way behind compared to students in other countries. He says longer school days and a longer school year is a way to level the playing field. CNN's Alina Cho reports. |

What's a Wingnut? Someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of American politics. In a polarized two-party system, they have disproportionate influence and too often define the terms of debate.
