End of the world in 2012?

Posted: 10:31 PM ET
American Morning - amFIX

The upcoming movie '2012' is based on what happens when the Mayan calendar ends. The film predicts chaos on earth in the title year.

Scientists said the idea of the world ending in 2012 is nonsense but that hasn't stopped the doomsday chatter.

Jim Gargin, the chief scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center spoke to T.J. Holmes on CNN's American Morning Friday.

its all nonsense

With all due respect to your NASA guest, I can't accept his position on the subject. Since NASA is government funded he has to take the "official" Washington position. When Miles O'Brien comes on to say that "it isn't so", then I will relax!

Linda S. Myers   November 14th, 2009 7:01 am ET

Let's get real. The world will end in God's time. No amout of research, reading or studying the universe will give us a day and time for the end of the world. Only God knows when it will happen. So let us all work at living God centered lives, make a commitment to God, and when the end does come, we will go to be with Jesus in Heaven. That is what I am looking forward to. So you news reporters, stop talking about something that is not true and stick to the important issues.

hey folks Jim did not address the real premise, or "science," as he calls it. The movie is based on normally harmless neutrinos that pass thru the earth from solar flares, but during an extreme flare that clauses a destabilization on the earths core, which leads to tectonic shifts and pole destabilization.

The only leap is the harmless neutrinos having a microwave effect on the earths core. But in reality we still do not know the full effects of these sub atomic partials when mutilated.

Also Jim failed to mention a destabilization in the earth's protective magnetic field, Already present off the Atlantic coast of Brazil. where weak magnetic field leads to satellite failure and airplane instrument electronic failure

Wouldn't you know it... here I have finally reached retirment age and can rest on my laurels, Social Security and investments... and now the world is coming to the end!

All of the years that I worked and suffered in the cold cruel world, and repeatedly disappointed by broken promises of apocalypse year after year... now I'm told that it's really about to happen.

Of course I can't be sure it will happen this time or not, since Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity have not yet confirmed the approach of "the end"... but I'm waiting with bated breath to hear that they have indeed avoided the suffering by blowing their own feeble brains out.

Mitchell   November 16th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

I doubt if it will be the end of he world by 2012 but if Obama and the liberal/socolists have their way it will be the end of the U.S. as we know it. Wow....a politically correct, bankrupt, socolist country on the way down the tubes.

morgan thomas   November 24th, 2009 7:35 pm ET

It might happen about the time that guy in the white rob comes back and that is a long way off.

Russ   November 25th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

I just can't see the world coming to an end ...especially when I'm only in my mid fifties....maybe they just ran out of room on whatever they made the calender out of.

william   November 25th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

According to the Bible the end will come on May 21, 2011 witch is exactly 7000 yrs. after the flood of Noah's day of May 21, 4990 B.C. seven days before the flood Noah was told to get into the Ark See 2Peter-3:8 and See Genesis-7:1,4,10. God has always warned his true believers of pending destruction. See Genesis-19:15-24 The doom of Sodom and Gomorrah there God warns Lot and his family to flee. There are many other examples throughout Bible pointing out those in the Kingdom of light and not the Kingdom of darkness will know, see 1Thessalonians-5:1-6. Those who are his "Beloved" 2Peter-3:1,8. also see Danial-9:23; 10:11. God's elect will decerneth time and judgment, Ecclesiastes-8:5,6. those that don't, their misery is great upon them.

francisco siqueiros   November 25th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

I will be here to see the 2012 mayan calendar passes by and nothing happens.......... lets hope.
Its strange to have even a day for such an end....Only God knows for sure.

Tom Black   November 27th, 2009 12:59 am ET

The end of the world (age) will arrive on May 27,2012.
but our immediate concern should be the
horrific time that leads up to it. As of tomorrow the time remaining
will be 911 days.

Franny   November 27th, 2009 8:31 am ET

The only way I see the world ending in 2012? If Sarah Palin were to win a Presidential election. It would be a certain disaster for all Human kind!

Ray   November 28th, 2009 1:24 am ET

I think it is great!! Let stupid people form cults and commit mass suicides! Weed the stupid from our mists! The world is ending!!!! Here have some Kool aid! I for one wish it all WOULD end! man has had his chance. Give the cock roaches a go!

Xaron   November 28th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

The message of 2012 is a warning to the world that we are on the wrong path. We are being given an opportunity to change our ways and start respecting the earth and everything and everybody that is living here.

creighton   November 28th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

2012 is the alignment of our sun with the galactic center. It happens every 26,000 years.

As for our country, defined by it's current political structure? Well that was doomed from the start. The two party system has its own destruction built into it. Just listen to the "my team' dogma being spewed everywhere. Dems and Reps will fight a helpful measure to the death, if it's put forth by the 'other team'.

If you want to see the future of America, read up on your Roman history, we follow their every footprint.

thatguy   November 29th, 2009 3:16 am ET

Or...maybe that the reason the mayans' calendar just ends is because that is when the conquistadors came through and killed everybody. i am just saying it is a possibility.

Xaron   November 29th, 2009 11:45 am ET

The Mayan calendar and 2012 has more to do with the inhabitants of earth needing to change their ways. It is a warning that we need to show respect and gratitude for our planet as well as every living thing and being.

Celina Troutman   November 29th, 2009 9:01 pm ET

Where in your Bible does Jesus say the specfic day and year this world will end. Everyone needs to wake up and realize that we are all going to die one day.

Pam   November 30th, 2009 2:59 am ET

I don't believe that year is set in stone, but I do believe if alot of things don't change soon we are headed there soon after. We are showing
our children on TV sex in cartoons and music videos. We are showing them the wrong morals. Then the media makes these immoral people famous and rich. When I was young they started this good health revolution. Now we need to start a morals revolution. We need
to start making parents have licenses for children and take parrenting
classes. We need to have doctors who give Octo moms babys be
fathers to pay child support! The government should get money from that doctor and that will never happen again. Any women who has
children should be randomly tested for drugs after a drug conviction
till her kids are 18 years old. Thats my opinion.

Rick McDaniel   November 30th, 2009 11:01 am ET

Probably not. There is, however, a very real possibility of the outbreak of WW III by that time, as the Islamic World, continues to attempt the takeover of many countries around the world.

Steph   December 1st, 2009 4:20 pm ET

They said the world would end on New Years eve of 1999 as we jumped into a new milennia as well...

2012 is just another year. One that will come and go without any real significance beyond the norm, leaving the dooms day people standing on their soap boxes with nary a word of explanation on just why the world DIDN'T end.

balljac   December 2nd, 2009 4:46 pm ET

Silly people, everybody knows the world is going to end on Y2K.

Anderson   December 3rd, 2009 1:01 pm ET

maryangels   December 3rd, 2009 6:51 pm ET

Wingnuts of the week

What's a Wingnut? Someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of American politics. In a polarized two-party system, they have disproportionate influence and too often define the terms of debate. With "Wingnuts of the Week," commentator John Avlon tries to take that power back.
