What’s a wingnut?

Someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of American politics. In a polarized two-party system, they have disproportionate influence and too often define the terms of debate.

With “Wingnuts of the Week,” commentator John Avlon tries to take that power back. Each Friday he joins us on "American Morning" with his wingnut picks – one from the right and one from the left.

Who should be this week's "Wingnuts of the Week"? Tell us in the comments below.

Pelosi for wingnut

Grieg Pedersen   July 24th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Wingnuts are going to continue to wield disproportionate influence in American politics until we change the way we vote. Experience both in and out of the US shows that Instant Runoff Voting (www.fairvote.org) forces candidates to cater more to the center than to the fringes.

When we vote, we simply "rate the candidates from first to worst."

When the vote is counted, we count the first-choice votes. If no one wins a true majority, throw out the candidate with the least votes and redistribute his next-choice votes. Continue this simple process until someone wins an actual majority.

Only have one choice you like? Vote only for that candidate. If he loses, since you didn't give a second choice you abstain form the runoff. Simple.

No "wasted votes." Everyone can vote his conscience. No "spoiler effects." And best of all, it takes the power away form the extremes. This is the only way I can think of to de-polarize American politics.

A good start would be for CNN to take the lead in polling – both online and phone – by allowing people to vote this way. Get people used to it and expecting it, and they'll work to get it changed. The states are allowed to run their elections however they like, and the Electoral College ensures that no state changing its counting methods in any way changes its influence in presidential elections.

Al Mills Jr   July 27th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Mitch McConnel and scatter brain Palin.
I listened to her speach last night and is she a scatter brain

Giacomo Falconi   July 28th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

I think Lou Dobbs should be at the top of your list as he has become more right wing with each passing day and is now embracing the racist lunatics who are saying Obama is not an american citizen.

Fred DuBose   July 29th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

"Wingnuts" and the lobbyists' congressional prostitutes are the two most contributing forces to the economic and cultural anarchy that is overwhelming the U.S. today.

MICHAEL GLASSER   July 30th, 2009 9:00 am ET

About 2 months ago, I was driving and about to enter Interstate-95 to go toward Miami. Suddenly some school kids ran across the I-95 entrance.
The car in front of me stopped short and i stopped, about 2 cars lengths behind her. Just as I felt at ease that nether the driver in front of me nor I had hit the school kids, BANG BODA BOOM, I was rear ended by a young lady in an SUV. The vehicle rear ended me at approximately 45 miles per hour. Luckily my handicapped lift and scooter at the rear of my vehicle absorbed most of the shock. When the officer arrived to help us he asked the young lady what happened. She looked blankly at the officer and then gazed at me and said "I don't know, I was looking down (Texting) and all of a sudden I felt the airbag and I really don't know what happened then".
A CASE FOR NOT TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!

Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The young driver was a cute WINGNUT and could have been the star of "CLUELESS".

Regine Arlington, Virginia   July 31st, 2009 7:20 am ET

Good morning all,
Why not use the Campbell Brown footage from Thursday nite of Bill Bennett calling President Obama stupid, several times.
The right wing would be livid if anyone on the left had called President Bush stupid on a News program.
Remember the Republicans statements that any one who said something to disrespect the President was un-American. I guess that only applies to Presidents being the RIGHT color and belonging to the RIGHT party.
Come on why won't CNN roll that footage, discuss Bill Bennett WINGNUTcomments. Shame on CNN for hiding a Contributor's-WINGNUT RANTS

Charlotte   August 7th, 2009 8:18 am ET

How about the wingnut Virginia Foxx and her comment that the government is trying to get health care reform passed so they can kill older Americans? I'm embarrassed to say I'm from North Carolina.

Or, generally these Republican goons who are disrupting town hall meetings? It doesn't really matter if the GOP or the insurance companies put them up to it...it seems that they don't want to be bothered with th facts, their minds are made up. Why not ask legitimate questions and let the congressman or woman answer and then make up your own mind about whether to support it.

I've noticed the GOP doesn't have many ideas to offer instead of the proposed healthcare reform...the party of NO!

Palin: Obama's "Death Panel" Could Kill My Down Syndrome Baby

Thank goodness she's an ex-governor..this would sound ridiculous if she was still in office...now she can be...all that she can be...

Reporters don't have to make up this stuff....she provides it freely.

Vote for Sarah Palin...Wingnut of the Year

Kris   August 10th, 2009 12:43 am ET

Sarah Palin, of course – "death panels"

Kate Obenshain – for comparing Palin to Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin – all strong women or some such nonsense.

LOIS OSTRAAT   August 10th, 2009 8:30 am ET

SARAH P OF ALASKA, WINGNUT OF THE WEEK--JUST WHERE DOES ANY VERSION OF THE HEALTH BILL STATE THAT CITIZENS WILL BE PUT TO DEATH. RIDICULOUS!!!

Winifred Hyson   August 10th, 2009 8:51 am ET

I nominate the organization 60plus.org which sponsors long scare commercials on TV aimed at preventing passage of the health care reform bill.

Teresa   August 10th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Sarah Palin gets my vote this week and the rest of the year and all of next year. She talks about the country she loves. Sarah Palin loves only Sarah Palin. She makes statements like that for only one reason, to stay in the public eye. If the media would quit reporting her idiotic views, maybe she'd go away. From my lips to God's ears!

Greg Rhudy   August 11th, 2009 8:18 am ET

Obama definately gets wingnut of the week and year for wanting to add more debt, creating another government disaster, but most of all for speaking out against Americans rights for free speech!

Carol Schuster   August 11th, 2009 10:15 am ET

I think the guy who suggested that health care reform wasn't needed because the cost of liposuction has come down and the government doesn't pay for that procedure.

Jacqueline Whitt   August 14th, 2009 11:03 am ET

The far right wingers, who don't read before screaming. Sarah Palin, is a pretty woman who has never read a real book, on history along with the hate talk from Russ the pill taking talk host. How can anybody with a mind but any faith in these rightwingers. Everyone has a right to an opinion, only if its not down right lies. Lies, only hurt people and good causes. Health care reform has to happen. The insurance companies are in control of our health. Not the doctors or nurses or even ourselves.
Big business controls the america we live in today. Let.'s take our country

Roger   August 14th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Enough Sarah Palin already. Simply trying to get elected on her looks, nothing inside! Get over yourself! CLUELESS!!!

G. Rose Marie   August 15th, 2009 7:33 am ET

Lou Dobbs wingnut on the right. Although he claims to be politically "independent," Dobbs has shown his extreme right wing views by his comparison of former DNC chair Dr. Howard Dean to a vampire "who can only be diffused by a stake to his heart!" And by continuing to foment the nonsense that President Obama must show his long form birth certificate to prove he is an American citizen.

Doe Hall   August 15th, 2009 8:05 am ET

The guy who grabbed the black women's "Rosa Parks" sign at Claire McCaskill's town hall meeting. If that had been my wife's sign, my man would have gotten a major beat down.

Richard, Kankakee, IL.   August 17th, 2009 7:11 am ET

Senator Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), has become one of the rights biggest wingnuts, you would think him being in office that he would learn to curb his tongue, but the man has shown little honor, in his cowardly acts and words! Telling full blown lie to people is just not what honorable people do!

Lou Dobbs is a wingnut too, ever since President Obama took the oath of office he has slowly shown that he is a right wingnut, at every opportunity and even when there is no reason to show his hate and fear, he makes sure that we now that he does not like the President being in office! When the right does something unseemly, he ask why doesn't the President respond to thier unjust acts, as if it is his responsiblity to answer every horrid act of the right! The man has to run the country, so unlike Lou Dobbs, he does not have time to be watching everything that the right does, unlike Lou Dobbs!

Richard, Kankakee, IL.   August 17th, 2009 7:17 am ET

Doe Hall

Yeah that old man assaulted that black woman at that town meeting, he had no right to go over and yank anything out of anyones hand, the people running the town meeting had no right telling the people that they had to give up their freedom of speech rights to enter the town meeting! And yet many others had sign in that meeting too, even the Cops refused to stop people from acting upon their freedom of speech rights. They know full well that they do not want to be in court for any reasons of suppressing the right to speak out in America!

Richard, Kankakee, IL.   August 17th, 2009 7:22 am ET

Michelle Malkin is a fine woman but man i can not stand her politics, if she needs a date I volunteer to spend a fun filled evening with her, as long as she is a single of course! :)

Richard, Kankakee, IL.   August 17th, 2009 7:28 am ET

I also nominate that airline company that keep forty-five Americans captive on that plane for over seven hours, and over night. When did being on an airplane that is owned by any of the airline become like con-air you have no right, to clean toilets, water to drink, food, and fresh clean air!

That is why i have not flown for over ten years and I tell all of my family and friends not to fly as long as we do not have a bill of rights for airline passenger. But as long as we Americans get treated worse then cattle they will no get any of my money!

Bob   August 18th, 2009 8:51 pm ET

Pelosi for wingnut....how can you not go after her.......lies,lies, and still more lies......oh,,,she's sure the CIA lied......what happened to that.....I know, she threw you a curve and had you chasing astroturf.....no wait....Nazi's......no wait.....organized mobs at public rallies.....no wait...its the insurance companies......no wiat its those auto exec's in their private jets......no wait...she ordered some half billion dollars worth of private jets to fly her around on our dime....no wait..the public outrage reduce the purchase to just a couple jets, but now that the money saved has been already appropriated instead of not spending it...lets spend it on something else...maybe we could send it to Acorn to help bus them to healthcare rallies........noooooooooo!

Mason Green   August 21st, 2009 9:17 am ET

These are my nominations for next week's wingnuts. The basic theme is that wingnuts on both sides use degrading racist or sexist imagery to promote their agendas, imagery that most sane Americans would find very offensive.

On the left: PETA. It's been running offensive billboards featuring a degrading image of a scantily clad, obese female next to the words "Save the Whales: Lose the Blubber". Women's rights groups have, quite naturally, gotten very offended by this. This is not the first time PETA has used sexism to promote its agenda:

http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/08/19/why-feminist-peta-protesters-got-kicked-out-of-powells/

On the right, Kristin Atkinson, a blogger at the conservative site Townhall.com, who claimed that Barack Obama's mother-in-law Marian Robinson has been practicing Santeria or Voodoo in the White House. This is, quite obviously, an appeal to some of the most degrading racial stereotypes of African Americans.

Atkinson's original blog entry is no longer accessible, but quite a few other people have taken notice, including conspiracy-monger Alex Jones and his website, Prisonplanet.

http://www.prisonplanet.com/voodoo-in-obama%E2%80%99s-white-house.html
http://wonkette.com/410601/is-barack-obamas-mother-in-law-a-black-witch
http://www.therightperspective.org/2009/08/18/obama-mom-in-law-practising-witchcraft/

"Racist, sexist, and just plain wingnutty." PETA and Kristin Atkinson are my suggestions for next week's wingnuts.

Ted Tartaglia   August 21st, 2009 11:59 am ET

You should feature Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. These two wingnuts are about as disconnected from reality as one can get and they are both uneducated Repubs.

Gina   August 21st, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Pamela Pilger should be ranking pretty high in the wingnut category!

Tina   August 21st, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Glenn Beck, total wingnut! Contradicts himself whenever he feels like it. Will express his opinion, then the next year, even the next month, will express the opposite opinion, as if he held that position all along. And is vitriol is TOTAL WINGNUT!

Matthew J. Thibeault   August 21st, 2009 12:58 pm ET

How about Ted Kennedy?
5 years ago he had the Massachusetts law changed to make it more difficult, if not impossible to have the governor of the state pick a Senator to replace one who was leaving his post.

He did this because at the time Mit Romney, a republican was governor and when John Kerry, a democrat, was leaving office, Mit would have been able to replace Kerry with a Republican. Ted Kennedy would not have liked that.

Now, because he knows he close to leaving office and because he knows that deomcratic governon Duval Patrick has little chance of being re-elected, he wants the law changed back to the way it was before a republican has the chance to retake the governorship.

Not only is Ted Kennedy a wingnut, he's a two faced elitist nut job of a wingnut! Whats good for the goose is good for the gander......unless your name is Kennedy and you live in Massachusetts!

SL   August 21st, 2009 9:01 pm ET

Next week's wingnut should be you! Instead of working towards common ground, you're calling people names and making fun of them. YOU are defining the terms of the debate on issues relevant to Americans, by marginalizing the people involved in these debates.

You have a PUBLIC FORUM. Why not be the center of debates, and open up this site as a place for respectful debate, instead of childish name-calling.

The reason we have a polarized two party system is because people aren't discussing, debating or allowing themselves to act outside of party lines for fear of public humiliation. Everyone's reactionary and pointing fingers and so people are huddled together with their respective parties to protect themselves from the ridicule of the other side. How about you take the lead and make this a place for rational, respectful debate instead of perpetuating the name calling, immaturity and us versus them mentality that pervades current politics.

You aren't taking power back. You're perpetuating reactionary behavior. What ever happened to respecting people?

Tom Settles   September 4th, 2009 10:54 am ET

VAN JONES – Uses swear words repeatedly in public forums, and signs multiple petitions and is member of group that thinks our government had involvement in planning 9/11 attack. CRAZY WINGNUT
NANCY PELOSI – calls Americans who choose to speak thier minds – "Traitors" and "AstroTurf" after Obama sends Acorn and SEIU on buses to town hall meetings. HYPOCRITE WINGNUT
MARIA CANTWELL – goes on CNN to back up her claims that CIA, who protect our country, should be prosecuted. It is the Senators and Congress that have voted to raise deficits to $10 TRILLION that should be prosecuted. SPENDAHOLIC WINGNUT

bjnj   September 4th, 2009 10:55 am ET

The HEAD wingnut is John Avalon for setting himself up as an authority when IN FACT he is an underachiever and a wannabee. Our "commander in chief" is all talk. He got the job by acting like a celebrity. Now "some" voters are seeing their mistake and Obama's credability is headed for the toilet.

He's worried about a second term. The only RECORD he holds is the highest deficiet. Go away John John.

Bob G.   September 4th, 2009 11:04 am ET

John Avion – you're the wingnut.

steve pastner   September 4th, 2009 11:10 am ET

my perpetual favorites ,for this or any other week, are the "zionism is racism" / boycott israel out of existence crowd who often describe themselves as "progressives" and "human rights-y" while acting as useful idiots for the most bigoted–indeed genocidal–forces in the world. ( e.g hamas, hizbollah and their patron ahmadinejad and the mullahs)

In effect they are "so far left, they're right", if one uses a circular model of political ideology.

we have a particularly strident and annoying cabal of them here in ann arbor who have picketed a local synagogue for 6 years in the idiotic notion that this has a constructive effect on their cause..

u2canfail   September 4th, 2009 11:13 am ET

This week it has to be Bachman, (R) MN for stating in Denver, that the GOP as a group...."needs to sign a covenant, and slit there wrists to be blood brothers against Obamacare."

And to think she was elected? But then the GOP group slitting their wrists, this could be good!

Dave   September 4th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Jim Greer hands down! No one else comes close! Closely followed by the numerous seniors who beef that they don't want socialized medicine but are happy to use medicare. Arrgh!

Keith Francis   September 4th, 2009 11:22 am ET

My suggestion for "Wingnut of the Week" is – John Avlon and CNN's Wingnut of the week. This program is so biasedly oneside, you even have Avlon on as representing the right wing perspective in a duality with a Democrat politician on health care. If this were "Liberal wingnut of the Week" it might be more accurate. But while the right is full of wing nuts, Avlon's idea of a liberal wingnut is a Hawaii Democratic politician who advocates that workers on a U.S. project in the U.S. territory of Guam, get paid what most U.S. workers make. Avlon thinks this is "wingnutty" because how dare we pay third world countries first world wages! The audacity. CNN needs to dump this obvious entertainment intended piece which is so biased, that it's intellectually insulting.

Vernon   September 4th, 2009 11:24 am ET

These right wing nuts should put thier heads back in thier buttocks and shutup! They have already put this Country at the brink of collapse!

Hack Weisenkopf   September 4th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Avlon couldn't lean further left if you cut off his leg below the jerking knee. Quit blowing smoke, it tickles.

C Spurgeon   September 4th, 2009 11:25 am ET

I think all of the wingnuts(Wackos) on the right and the left should go back to their corner of the world and raise their little Wackos as they see fit and leave the rest of us alone. Maybe just maybe if they get out of the way we can fix this country and get it back for all the people and not just the Wingnuts and media ratings.Enough with the hate statements and hate reporting....

Tiffany Santi   September 4th, 2009 11:28 am ET

A US president should ask kids what they can do for the country NOT what kids can do for the president. Very self indulgent and counter productive for our country. America has always been about country. That is our strength. No citizen should promote themself before country including the president.

Erik in Real Pennsylvania   September 4th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Michele Bachmann. All day, every day.

Michael A. Kunikis   September 4th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Pastor Ernie Sanders has a right wing radio show on 120 AM and last week said the he has proof that Obama goes to "sodomite" bath houses with his "sodomite" friends. Just in case your not sure, "sodomite" is wingnut for homosexual.

Dave   September 4th, 2009 11:38 am ET

John P. Avlon for wingnut of the week. The more you liberal idiots speak, the deeper the hole you dig for yourselves. Thanks for doing what the republican leadership failed to do for the last 20 years – scare people back to their senses.

leadfoott2   September 4th, 2009 11:39 am ET

How about Van Jones for being part of the "truther" movement. A group of people who think Bush allowed 9/11 to happen so he could bomb Afganistan. Or is he exempt since he's part of the Obama administration?

Lisa in Shelton   September 4th, 2009 11:43 am ET

how about CNN's own Ruben Navarette? – his articles always contain a few wingnutty ideas.

Brian   September 4th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Van Jones should be a lock for "wingnut of the Week". This guy is out there. Between his radical ideology and his unbelievable perception on "white environmentalists". This guy should get "Wingnut of the Month"

Emma   September 4th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Be careful, your prejudice is showing wingnuts!!!!!

Linda   September 4th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Glenn Beck...with his Red Scare tactics and ridiculous rants. This
man is irresponsible and dangerous, in my opinion. Fox, wake up.

J of K   September 4th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Every time someone disagrees with Mr. Obama they are called a racist. The real wingnut is the person that continues to put race into every disagreement. For the truly wingnut job, Obama is actually half white, so the racist comments are even more out of line.

CD   September 4th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

I have the perfect idea . . . .Obama speaks to the kids next week but following that Cheney gets to visit and speak to all the kids as well. Lets see how fair and unbiased it is that way.

Andre   September 4th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Wingnut – Van Jones. he is caught in one gaffe after another and makes a hollow apology with no repercussions. He is associated with groups that if white-based would have him dismissed in dishonor and the President that tapped him impeached. Since the groups he has been affiliated with and have used to forward his agenda are all black nationalist and/or socialist – it is OK? Get real folks this guy has an agenda that is all-American as Borat.

MJDrage   September 4th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Where oh where do I start! The little billionaire is treating NYC like his personal fiefdom! The laws mean nothing and he has already stated that there is no one running against him in November. Wingnut doesn't half describe him.

Andre   September 4th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Parents have every right to determine what their kids are exposed to – that is an expectation that should be respected. John, you are doing what caused Obama to fail – you don't understand that Americans REALLY DO THIS – THEY REALLY DO CARE ABOUT WHAT THEIR KIDS ARE EXPOSED TO! Obama has no clue about middle America and how our kids are rasied. We don't sit in churches with our kids while the Pastor rants about how another race of people are evil and oppressive like Obama did with his kids. We don't do crack cocaine as a youth and then think that is good role model material. We don't elect a President to find he wants to meddle in every aspect of our lives. Obama is another candidate for wingnut as his agenda is still as murky as most of his other records from schools and organizations he has been associated with.

MGB44   September 4th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

John, I nominate you for Wingnut of the Week. Get a clue.

Ken Hanba   September 4th, 2009 12:28 pm ET

If parents are upset because the President of the United States wants to talk to kids about their future and commitment then they were obviously deprived or asleep during their education experience. Our President is a great example for all, including children, of how self commitment and dedication can yield success. Maybe those parents who are upset about this should be required to watch it in order to supplement their educational gaps and get a good dose of common sense which is obviously missing.

B Dodge   September 4th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

I think we are seeing a very sad time in our country's history. It appears that no one cares about the good of the country. It does not matter that we desperately need health care reform for our countries sake, it just matters that we destroy the opposite politcal party anyway we can. Winning ,anyway possible to regain or keep control of political power. These baseless attacks and outwrite lies to whittle away the Presidents support are hurting this country terribly. It used to be that the country came first. Now it's me and my party no matter what it cost the rest of us.

marsha berger   September 4th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

I think there should be a special place in the wingnut hall of fame for Glenn Beck, whose tirades border on sedition. He would have been right at home with propagandists like Goebbels, right down to his television appearance in lederhosen!

Greg   September 4th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

John Avlon – For his failure to understand that centrist position of Americans is what he refers to as "liberal" and the polls clearly show that a supermajority of Americans demand a public option or no change at all. Cowardice in the face of a fight will not be tolerated.

William   September 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Fear mongering will not help the GOP cause. Don't forget tthat Reagan and Bush Sr gave speeches during their administrations to the public school system promoting their agenda in 1986 and 1989. What hypocricy to accuse Obama of a socialist ideology. It is time for the GOP to recognize that their white rural academically challenged religious zealot base is a thing of the past.

J of K   September 4th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Just read about "ObamaCare Supporter Bites Off Finger Of Protester"
how can opponents of the donkeycrats be called wingnuts after THIS type of actions from the people organized by MoveOn.org. Isn't that one of Obama's group?

John   September 4th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Jim Greer and Glenn Beck who believe that the President will indoctrinate their kids with a 10 minute speech. Go home and educate your kids yourselves so you teach them the difference between right and wrong and they are not "changed" by someone talking about how important education is.

CD   September 4th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Small history note Bush takes office in recession leads economy out of it and the many rolling blackouts and two wars and Democrats get elected to office because more people oppose the war and now we are back in a recession again. With deficits soaring out of control and even more spending proposed on the horizon. Hmmm no pattern here is there?

rimantas   September 4th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

wingnut of the week: obama

Rob from Maine   September 4th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

This is just my opinion, but the following was posted by a wingnut:

Dave, my question to you is, How many of those Kingoms of Man that failed were believers in a higher being? Many, I think. How many wars throughout history, have killed millions in the name of The Almighty.

And notice one other thing. I did capitalize the reference to "Him". You don't have to believe in God to be a decent human being. It is time for this country to "really" seperate Church and State or nothing will get done.

"It is written…Man cannot succeed without God. Man pushing their own agenda will fail. Give it time, all men will fail without a foundation. And those of you who think otherwise…look at all the kingdoms of man…they have all failed.

America is failing because we think we can fix all things. If we would all learn about God and the love he has for us we can move mountains and peace will be with all the world."

Steve   September 4th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Go West, young man. Pretty much the entire Repub contingency of the Arizona legislature qualifies. These are the geniuses who OK'd guns in bars and whose legislation keeps AZ at the bottom of the list for education.

Dana   September 4th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

This is a really, really sad commentary on how evreything that President Obama or his admnistation says or attempts to do is seen through partisan eyes.

Just because the President is asking school kids to write themselves letters on how they can help him does not, I don't believe, constitute a socialist act.
People are commenting the children are not being asked to help their family or friends. But do parents really believe that this isn't about holding themselves responsible and has nothing to do with President Obama.
Any country should be proud to have their President, elected by the people, to be sending a positive message to their small chidren.
Does anyone really think that a 3rd grader is going to come up with a suggestion to combat global warming?
This is just a way for the President of our country to speak directly to children, which doesn't happen too often.

I have a distinct feeling that if President Bush had done the exact same thing, asking for the letter, and Democrats attacked him I think (I know) they would be saying how callous it is. If any Republican would say different then they are not being honest.

The only reason there is any uproar is that it is Preseident Obama. If a President McCain was to make the same speech no one would have had an issue with it.

With all the issues going in our country and in the world right now it is very sad for people to be so small minded that they want to focus their energy on something like this.

President Obama is not "indoctrinating" kids or anyone else with anything except to give a positive message and get kids involved and thinking they can do something to help their President. How cool is that?

Let's remember that helping our President means helping the American people. That's a message I think we can all learn something from.

Sharron brust   September 4th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

Biggest Wingnut: The "I hate Obama" Preacher who wants his children fatherless and Michelle a widow. He's more than dangerous!

John Huff   September 4th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

The whole country...everyone of us. We are imploding. We have become dysfunctional to the point where we have started our decline as a super power, an empire.

JohnB   September 4th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Wingnuts need two 'wings'; how about the nutjob duo of Pelosi and Reid.

Mike York   September 4th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

My pick for wingnut is CNN, for there rearkissing reporting on the godlike Obama

C Spurgeon   September 4th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

Better add Pawlenty to the list. Claims the speech to kids is univited and must have "motives". This is a man we are supposed to be taking seriously as a candidate for president. Keep him in Mi9nnesota folks if that is what you want. Shame on his ignorance and politics.

Larry Joy   September 4th, 2009 1:16 pm ET

Van Jones by a mile (puts him strongly in the running for wingnut of the month). Check out his ideology and background .......... an avowed communist. As the Administration puts in place their "shadow govt" of czars, with no accountability to congress, Jones calls Republican opposition "assholes" because they oppose massive government spending, takeover of private enterprise, pushing a socialist agenda, and totally ignoring Obama's statement that this will be the most transparent administration in history

Steven W. Mc Cafferty   September 4th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I taught chemistry in high school for 32 yrs. it's about time a president had the guts to tell parents and students to start doing your job!!
Sincerely Steven W. Mc Cafferty

clayton   September 4th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

i just wonder why you are saying the republicans use name calling by calling them names. all of you are like a bunch of school kids on the play ground. grow up

kevin   September 4th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

I nominate the Texas seccessionist. These were the same people who demanded we say the "Pledge of Allegience" in all schools.

Stephen Cohen   September 4th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

The entire United States Congress, which has passed some of the most outlandish legislation, and approved spending for issues that effect a very small number of people, simply because they could – like the 2,000 pound ape who was allowed to cross the street just because he could.

Jeremy   September 4th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

How about President Obama. I find it ironic that he's sharing his "compassion for education" with school children, however, he clearly wants his own children to be off limits to such classroom politicization. Upon moving to Washington, he chose to enroll his children in the private Sidwell Friends School.

Ted   September 4th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Dick Cheney, George Bush, John McCain, Bobby Jindal, Sarah the quitter Palin, Mitt Romney, Haley Barbour, Gov Sanford, the list is endless

Phillip Evans   September 4th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

President Obama is definitely a wingnut. Look at the original suggested lesson plans for his school speach. Unbelievable. Bush did nothing like that when he addressed the school children so don't give me your "well Bush did it" arguments. Aside from the fact that he shouldn't do everything Bush did (like pass healthcare legislation without paying for it), Bush didn't. Another wingnut has to be Van Jones. Bush orchestrated 911? What a moron. Down with the Czars.

Reformed Republican   September 4th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

My vote for wing nut of the week goes to:

The bat crap crazy commentator "Bob" on August 18th, 2009 8:51 pm ET and the rest of those that "think?" like he does.

And the award trophy for all these tea bagging, gun-totin', bible thumpin' whackos – new tin foil hats...

Shaik from Oregon   September 4th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

All conservatives – no matter what party.
A bunch of destructive cowards, who are just naysayers with no plans of their own.

William   September 4th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Sorry to see Cnn going to the far left and promoting Obama's programs.Cnn used to be the network that was fair, sad to see it is ubable to do that anymore and now want to muzzel Lou Dobbs.Guess if you have the money anyone or any network is for sale.

mike NY   September 4th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

Although obviously not from the right wing of either party I would like to nominate John Avlon. All this namecalling i.e. "wingnut" or "dimocrat" is only feeding the "hate" between the parties. Although, some (CNN apparently included and Mr. Avlon in particular) think it is funny, it only drives the wedge between the parties deeper. This does not help the President and may actually help his opposition.

George S   September 4th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

Wingnut of the Month needs to be John P. Avlon. My ,common sense, tells me that Mr. Avlon is living in denial. I'm going to save this e-mail and remind Mr. Avlon of his comments 3 years from. The bright of this is that we all live in a FREE country and have the right to express our opion, let's hope that continues. I'm going to make a wild guess and say that this comment will not be posted. :)

Jake   September 4th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Wingnuts are Detroit Red Wings hockey fans.

The people you are calling wingnuts are simply Americans exercising their right to free speech.

It is you who should be ridiculed for denigrating them... stop trying to stifle dissent... stop being propagandists for Obama.

mike NY   September 4th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

I would like to nominate John Avlon, The Democrat Congressional Leadership and CNN. All this name calling and disrespect for the opposition is not helping the President but actually may be helping his opposition.

William   September 4th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

Some facts for the liberals. Jan 3rd 2007 the day the dems took over Congress. Dow 12,821.77–GDP last quarter 3.5%-unemployment 4.6%–Bush set a record 52 straight months of job creations–The day Barney Frank took over the house financial services committee–Chris Dodds took over senate banking committee-15 months later what part of the economy was the meltdown in-financial and banking services. The health bill will ration health care, first they are taking over 600 billion from medicare, which will cut services, they will use the same system that the U.K. uses. That means if they say you can only spend 5,000 on your care that year and your treatments cost 20,000 that year, treatment will be refused, which means death panel.

Ashley   September 4th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Jim Greer, by far, should be Wingnut of the Year. Everytime I read his quote I'm not sure if I want to vomit or hide in my house for the rest of my life knowing that people like him exist and are actually in political office. YIKES

John   September 4th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Who are you to call people wing nuts/ Are you more eduucated them the puplic you serve.?

Mike M.   September 4th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

I vote for "Tom Settles" – who left a prior comment on this page.
Also, Glenn Beck, who could win this award this, and every, week.

abarclay   September 4th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

i nominate dave and andre. you both sound like your own kind of nut.

Geekist   September 4th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

i am a parent and grandparent..after reviewing a few news sites I am for the parents on this one... seems like Obama is trying to act more like a star than president, tis a shame and embarrassing..

Brian   September 4th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Colorado mother, Shanneen Barron. See CNN article on Obama's speech. Does she even make sense?

Bonnie   September 4th, 2009 3:17 pm ET

I can't find a better winner for wingnuts of the week than the GOP who are accusing the President of being a socialist, etc. over his education speech to children. They have completely moved into the Nation of Stupid. I do hope the majority of Americans see through this and don't buy into it, but it frightens me to hear of parents saying they are "afraid" of the President....since when is it bad to encourage kids to do well in school? Very sad.......

Thomas Payne   September 4th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Politics have no place in school.Indoctrination is indoctrination. What ever happened to the 3 R's?Reading, writting and arithmatic?Let kids be kids and learn and think freely for themselves without the gov't telling them what to believe in.
Socialism is Socialism and Socialists are Socialists I don't care what they call themselves now at days. You would have been spat upon or worse in my day.Ironic that the KGB's handlers code name for Alfred Rosenberg was "liberal" and funny how todays Socialist still get all fired up and bent out of shape about McCarthy and Operation Venona.Todays so called "liberals" are a disgrace to the Liberal founding-fathers who they now call criminals and would have been hung for treason end of story.
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers it is called Democracy in action"

"Democracy is the death of the Republic"-Plato

Kevin in McLean, VA   September 4th, 2009 3:54 pm ET

John Avlon for being arrogant and offensive towards those with whom he disagrees. Name calling isn't going to move the debate(s) forward and this is completely out of bounds.

stephanie   September 4th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

How about Van Jones? Green jobs czar and 9/11 government conspiracy theorist. Let's move beyond rhetoric and return CNN to good old fashioned non-biased reporting. There is a real story here. Get after it.

Jan S Wells   September 4th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Quote from the website:
"Parents may request that their students receive an alternate assignment rather than viewing the President's address. Click here for a Letter to Parents from Superintendent Gayle Sloan."
Gayle Sloan is the Superintendent of St. Tammany Parish Public School System

Note: No such choice was given parents when President HW Bush "spoke" to the children in school. Reagan spoke as well. Where were these wingnuts years ago?
I am appalled. Mr Obama is a sitting President of the United States. I never had an opportunity to watch or listen to the President of the United States, speak directly to us when we were in school. This is a national disgrace, I am ashamed my daughter graduated from this bigoted Parish.

Bob   September 4th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Pelosi is still the favorite for wingnut, though Van Jones is right up there.....

Judy   September 4th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

You should do more checking on those preachy types who claim to be Conservative Christians to your face but lead a different life behind closed doors. I have some interesting documentation on a holier-than-thou neighbor who ended up appearing in court records while declaring Obama to be the AntiChrist. She isn't nuts enough to be considered clinically insane but she scares me.

Richard Boyle   September 4th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

I suggest Michelle Malkin. No matter what the White House suggests or proposes, Ms Malkin continuously dips her pen in poison and goes to town about how socialist and unAmerican the nation is becoming and how government wants to take over everything and that the only correct point of view is hers. Wingnut-o-rama!!

A runner up could be the ever charming Ann Coulter who always has a kind word to say about those who do not hold her point of view (not!).

I cant believe some parents will be offended with advice from the president for the student to be good and responsible in school. Whats going on? you know ,too much freedom without responsibility is what 's happening now for the young americans. Its true that maybe children will listen because some parent or adult? wont listen . Well Its sad that we can hear this comment from people here in America.Forget politics teach your children to listen anything that is good whether coming from left or right or center "whatever" and have some good self discilpline, thats all i can say.

Donna   September 10th, 2009 7:23 am ET

Good grief where does one start as the numbers seem to be multiplying by the day.

1) Representaive Jim Wilson SC
2) Glenn Beck
3)Michelle Malkin
4)Sarah Palin
5)Philip Evans
6)Thomas Payne
7) Andre

The last 3 are others who posted messages. Andre claims Obama did crack cocaine and now wants students to do so. You should have another poll for best liar. (He wouldn't win as his comments are too stupid to be believable, at least by level headed thinking adults which he obviously has no connection to).

Right wing Republicans seem to be turning into domestic terrorists or at least taking lessons from them on how to behave. Very sad.

Chris Henry   September 10th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

For saying to the nation "This won't add one dime to the deficit" regarding govt run health care, I nominate President Obama as a wingnut. That's truly an insult to all citizens' intelligence. Like when he promised to bring the troops home and now is sending them to Afghanistan.

Ed Stewart   September 14th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

1) Glenn Beck – what is the left-wing conspiracy du jur, Mr. Beck?
2) Lou Dobbs – If you're white and blue collar, he's your man.
3) Anyone after Chris Matthews on MSNBC...can't forget those move-on.org types...
4) Sean Hate-ity

What bothers me, is that after 7 or 8 pm, MSNBC or Fox has a steady stream of partisan politics which people actually presume to be thoughtful commentary.

Anyone remember the days of McNiel-Lehrer?...ahhh, like walking through a field of intelligent discourse represented by the best minds they could dig up from both spectrums.

Mason Green   September 15th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

-Joe "You Lie" Wilson

-Mark Williams, the organizer of the "Tea Party" movement, who recently called Obama the "racist in chief".

Williams also called the President the "Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug". If THAT's not a racist comment, I don't know what is. The hypocrisy is stunning.

dlh   September 16th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

My nomination for this week is Rush Limbaugh for making the following comment on a story about a group of black kids that beat a white kid on the school bus.

"You put your kids on a school bus you expect safety but in Obama's America the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering 'yeah, right on, right on, right on.' Of course everybody said the white kid deserved it he was born a racist, he's white.

So Avlon labels those who want affordable health care, want congress to stop exporting jobs to the third world through corporate wrote trade deals, want racism out of the body politic, want funding to stop for illegal war and occupation, as wingnuts on the left.

Well Mr. Avlon that is the view point held by the majority although you would never know it by folks who peddle the corporate line in the MSM like yourself.

mike-sey   September 18th, 2009 6:56 pm ET

CNN's own Rick Sanchez surely qualifies for his emotional take-down of Fox news which served only to point out how he, and both Fox and CNN have become self promoting parodies of themselves , reporters and new gathering organizations. Expect the Daily Show will have a field day with the best political blah, blah, blah and a tweet on television over this.

CNN IS A WINGNUT

Mason Green   September 22nd, 2009 10:35 am ET

James Traficant is a wingnut, hands down.

Jack Cleveland   September 28th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

John P. Avlon is the wingnut of the year as far as I'm concerned. Thanks John, for stoking partisan passions, and creating an atmosphere of mistrust and hatred. Shame on you for encouraging readers to turn on each other.
Go join Fox News!! This is exactly the sort of thing I'd expect to see on Glenn Becks breathless, paranoid rantfest. CNN continues to spiral down into right wing nuttery. Objective, non partisan journalism at CNN is dead.
Thank God for Media Matters.org, The Center for Public Intergrity, and factcheck.org!!

Jim Merrick   September 28th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Bill Clinton! He can't be serious with "the vast right wing conspiracy." Didn't his wife come up with that while he was diddlin' in the oval office?

LC   September 28th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

No, no. "Wingnut" is short for "right-wing nut". The equivalent term for a liberal is "left-wing kook" or "moonbat". No idea where that came from, but that's the term used in the blogosphere.

Don't go rewriting our jargon! :)

Dan   September 29th, 2009 7:01 am ET

Tucker Carlson, who called having the small children singing a song praising President Obama "Khmer Rouge " stuff. Even if you assume the mostg cynical, politically-oriented brainwashing of the students by adults, that hardly compares to the degradation, torture, enslavement, and murder of several million people.

Mark Parker   September 29th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

Make him Wingnut of the Month!

A Republican member of the House of Representatives accused President Barack Obama of being "an enemy of humanity" during a conservative values forum this past weekend.

In a speech Saturday before the How to Take Back America conference, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) made comments that went far beyond the limits of traditional White House criticism. At one point, Franks demanded that Obama release his birth certificate to prove his constitutionally eligibility to hold office. The bluntest charge,

Republican Chairman Michael Steele as he went off on Tom Friedman's comments on CNN 9/30. How embarrassing. He seems ignorant of current events and though he professes calm and intelligent behavior, he doesn't seem to know how to do it.

Kim-Ha Albert in Seattle   September 30th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Stop calling people names like "wing-nuts" and REMEMBER, you have no shortage of people who would seem to qualify for that description right there at CNN! People who live in glass houses should not be throwing stones, especially if they constantly are reminding themselves that they are "the most trusted name in news"

JoMimi   September 30th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Which Wingnuts are responsible for the indecision over where to send the Guantanamo detainees???? I live in Kansas. Our Govenor , Senators and Congressmen have already told Washington that we don't want the detainees here. Are these Wingnuts aware that Hardin, Montana is begging for any type of prisoner they can get their hands on? Does Washington know this town can be saved from extinction if their brand new prison were utilized? Have these Wingnuts informed Obama there are more than just two possibilities for the detention of Guantanamo "detainees"? Obama has limited his choice to just two states; Kansas and Michigan. Send them where they are wanted and save a town. Wingnuts read up on Hardin, Montana and save us.

Mason Green   September 30th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

On the left: Either Alan Grayson or Jim Traficant.

On the right:

-Trent Franks

-Chuck Baldwin, who recently claimed that the United States will soon "break up" (http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2009/cbarchive_20090929.html) and that people should practice survivalist techniques (http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2009/cbarchive_20090922.html); in the former article he also described the end of apartheid in South Africa as that country's "demise", illustrating the "apartheid nostalgia" common among some right-wingers, while in the latter piece he claims that JERICHO (a TV show about a nuclear war) "could soon be our future".

-Radio host James Edwards, who had this to say in response to a recent discrimination lawsuit against Abercrombie & Fitch:

"She says they refused to hire her because she wears a head scarf. Actually, they probably refused to hire her because she’s not an attractive white girl. Abercrombie & Fitch used to be a wholesome, respectable company, until it was bought out by Les Wexner. He dumped the all-American values that had made the company great, and replaced them with Jewish values. He started selling sex, turning the company’s annual catalogs into pornographic magazines. And when you’re selling sex, you want beautiful women, which means you want white women. A&F stores are notorious for only hiring very attractive white people, especially girls. In fact, according to the article, Abercrombie had to pay $50 million back in 2004 for so blatantly refusing to hire non-whites."

http://www.thepoliticalcesspool.org/jamesedwards/2009/09/29/muslim-suing-abercrombie-for-discrimination/

If THAT little screed isn't an example of wingnuttery, I don't know what is,

Alicia   October 1st, 2009 8:56 am ET

Liz Cheney for saying that Obama is trying to turn our children into Obamabots more or less. But what less can you expect of someone who goes on television with such a rabid attitude that she does not let anyone get in a word edgewise?

Actually her crazy and wingnutty attacks against the President are just plain Wingnuttery.

Thomasine Georgeanne   October 9th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

Mr. John P. Avlon

You resort to infantile name-calling regarding people with whom you disagree (wingnuts, indeed), and then taunt them when they express justified anger.

You are part of the problem, not the solution.

Stop the hypocrisy.

Mason Green   October 14th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Yet more evidence that James Edwards is 100% a wingnut!

When the Republican National Committee launched their new website, Edwards attacked it for trying to appeal to minority voters. Although I am not a Republican, I think that trying to appeal to a broader audience is a good thing for the RNC to be doing, and I also think they need to work harder to keep racism and racists out of the party.

James Edwards, on the other hand, disagrees with me. In his twisted mind, it is a BAD thing for the GOP to even attempt to expand beyond its "angry white male" base. The radio host's latest jaw-dropping tirade is here:

http://www.thepoliticalcesspool.org/jamesedwards/2009/10/13/the-gop-is-determined-to-commit-suicide/

Unfortunately, while many people have never heard of him, James Edwards is VERY influential in certain segments of the conservative movement. Ted Nugent, Pat Buchanan (whom Ron Paul endorsed for president in '92), Jerome Corsi, Chuck Baldwin (whom Ron Paul endorsed for president in '08), John Derbyshire, David Duke, Chris Simcox (who is running against John McCain in the GOP senate primary next year) and Larry Pratt (the leader of Gun Owners of America) have all appeared on the show.

The WORST thing to do would be to ignore these bigots, as they will only gain more influence if they succeed in their attempt to paint themselves as legitimate "conservatives". The BEST thing to do is to expose them for the wingnuts they are.

Mason Green   October 20th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Here come two more wingnuts; their names are Edwin Merwin Jr. and Jim Ulmer, and they are county Republican Party officials in South Carolina. They recently wrote a newspaper op-ed containing a remark which reeked of anti-Semitism.

Read more about it here:

Earnie Everidge   November 3rd, 2009 9:08 am ET

Michelle Bachman for the week. It's obvious why. But if you have a wingnut of the year I'll vote for that idiot Glenn Beckhead.

Lesley   November 5th, 2009 10:23 am ET

Thank you so much for calling these "tea party" protesters out for what they are – right-wing extremists. As a native Bostonian I do NOT appreciate their appropriating our revolutionary history for the purpose of promoting their wacko ideas, and given the political climate here, I suspect most others in this area feel the same way. Let's hope their "movement" dies out soon.

Mason Green   November 10th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

Newest Wingnut: Igor Panarin (a former KGB agent who predicts that the United States is going to collapse next year).

http://www.alternet.org/story/143816/tea_partiers'_new_hero:_ex-kgb_agent_who_thinks_u.s._will_collapse_next_year/

His theories have been endorsed by many figures on the fringe of American politics, including those in the Tea Party movement, such as:

–Pat Buchanan, former presidential candidate

–Chuck Baldwin, former presidential candidate

–James Edwards, white supremacist radio host (read some of my other posts above for more info on Buchanan, Baldwin, and Edwards and what they believe)

–Joseph Farah (founder of WorldNetDaily), as well as over 50% of WND's audience, according to a poll conducted by the site

–The Houston Tea Party Patriots

–Bob Hoy (a tea party organizer from northern Virginia, who openly opposes racial integration and says "no one white wants to live in a black neighborhood"). This guy needs to set his watch back 55 years. Do all Tea Partiers share his views on race?

Considering that far-rightniks frequently accuse President Obama of being a socialist, a communist, et cetera, it's really quite telling that they are putting so much stock in the theories of a former Russian Communist spy. Who are the REAL communists, I wonder?

Jack Smith   November 16th, 2009 8:18 am ET

Pelosi on the left. Limbaugh on the right. Obama on the left. Hannity on the Right.
See the trend. The Rightwing nuts are in the press. The leftwing nuts are currently running the country.
I guess the question is who are you really more scared of right now? For me at this moment, it would be the left. But both are equal opportunity nuts. The problem is our country has lost it's center.

Marie   November 18th, 2009 9:34 am ET

This is not constructive.

sharon   November 18th, 2009 9:45 am ET

"Oathkeepers".

Made up of 24/7 law officers and military......who take an oath "not" to obey the commander an Chief--the Pres......................................................................who sound like those people who will take matters into "their " own hands.......no matter what the outcome......or how many people they will hurt/possibly kill.

There are many cults/para-military groups that also follow this sort-of twisted logic. NOT to mention........"illegal".

Richard   November 18th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

WINGNUT-John Avalon for implying that all rational people must be inside the Democrat/Republican sandwich. I reject both parties as completely disconnected from sound management of the economy, foreign policy, and as traitors to the constitution. I oppose the bailouts, stimulus, entitlement state, and "nation building".

Franny   November 27th, 2009 9:06 am ET

Wingnuts for every week! Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Beck, Palin, Rick Perry, Mark Davis, Elizabeth Hasslebeck, Lieberman, Cheney, Bill O'Reilly, and Joes sixpack. Just to name a few!

Wingnuts of the week

What's a Wingnut? Someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of American politics. In a polarized two-party system, they have disproportionate influence and too often define the terms of debate. With "Wingnuts of the Week," commentator John Avlon tries to take that power back.
