First lady, queen embrace

Michelle Obama is the messiah's wife, so anything is also possible with her lol.

Jokes aside, Michelle just has an aura of friendliness. When I saw a clip of her in The View doing the fist bump with the hostesses on Larry King Live, she was just THE people's person. She can be friends with everyone, and everyone wants to be her friend.

It's only natural that even the Queen herself is drawn to her aura of friendliness. But it's still amazing.

I can not believe the British News Commentator who said the Queen is "Sacred". Sorry Pal, that was back in the dark ages. A majority of the world is now much more educated and understands that a human being is NOT "Sacred". This word is reserved for "God" & "Jesus". So, us folks in the so called "Republics" seem to be much more educated than yourself.

I somewhat agree with David. The Queen in NOT sacred in the sense that most people know the word - sacred is reserved for the Holy Trinity. It warms me to see that they all got along so well and makes me proud of my English roots and my African ancestry. It's not often I can feel proud on both levels, but this right here,? – this right here does it for me?

I'm very happy that the "First Lady" is so very warm and still remains a lady in every sense of the word. Not "untouchable" as the Queen purportedly is. Just goes to show, we all need friendliness and kindness in our life including the Queen. May Michelle remain the great role model she is as our youth need to know about respect and ladylike deportment.

As a true blue Brit I can tell you that it's about time the Queen showed she is human. Perhaps at 82 years old she's starting to thaw. The majority of the British press think it's great, as do the British public. God save the Queen and long live Mrs. Obama.

Okay, the Queen knows her way around the block and she initiated the gesture. I kept thinking about how she might feel about the historical importance of a black couple in the White House. I would think that she is pretty sophisticated on that score. Her husband has spent a long time with Africans trying desperately to save the wildlife there. The Queen herself was in Kenya, I believe, when she got the news that her father had died and that she would soon have her coronation. But it must have been a moment like the swearing in on the plane of LBJ – unforgettable to everyone who witnessed it (she was staying with Prince Philip at Treetops, I think).

During the Bush presidency (I think the royal couple liked the father, but were perplexed by the weird humor of the son), she came to the States to celebrate Jamestown's founding' s 400th anniversary, and to visit the College of William and Mary. Bush made some awkward attempts at humor at her expense. She must feel a sense of relief that this new President is (although recently caught in a careless bon mot), much more aware and eloquent. And his father was one of her subjects, too.

So the British love of continuity in history must be able to accept this new presidency with great equilibrium and the same pleasure and hope most of us feel about it. What Brit isn't delighted to think that a First Lady wants to grow vegetables for the White House table in her garden, and to be able to think and speak about sustainability, conservation and wise husbandry for the common good?

Plus, who wouldn't want to give Michelle Obama a hug?

I think when they say the queen is sacred, they mean it in terms of she's he head of the church of England.

This is the America I know. Thank God for Barack and Michelle for bringing positive Aura back to politics. I know the Grand Ole Party is in trouble now.

This is just the way 1st Lady Obama is. If the Queen did not like her........she would not have made the first move and put her arm around Mrs Obama.

Maybe The Queen found Mrs. Obama, irresistibly charming and affectionate, and decided to relax, not only herself, but protocol.
Maybe it’s time for the “human” side to come out, in the world, with everyone, including world leaders.
I find it refreshing that the Obamas, are so open, personable, and “human”, unlike the appearance of rigidity, stiffness, and sometimes elitist projections, seen in the past.
Even though, not shared by many British subjects, many Americans find a warm quality about Queen Elizabeth II.
I find this “openness”, personibility, and “genuineness”, a welcome change.
Congratulations to both Queen Elizabeth II, and the Obamas for reflecting their warm human qualities. They, after all are as human as the rest of us, they just happen to be leaders.

I'm British and smiled when I saw the footage. This is being blown out of all proportion, along with the G20 demonstrations. The British admire Mrs. Obama a great deal... and it's pretty obvious that our Monarch feels the same way too. When she asked Mrs O to keep in touch you know that she truly meant it.

I'll venture there's something more important to this than just a brief embrace between to ladies. The Queen of England knows more about P.R. and message management than even the most professional communications director. She's a living, breathing P.R. tool of her government and country. She, like all the heads of state at the G-20, is fully aware that this American president may be the most internationally revered leader of the past century. Being close to him, sharing his reflected glory and the admiration directed at him (and by extension, his wife) has a huge upside.

I trust that President Obama will be able to use this adulation not only for our country, but for the good of the entire world. Whether you voted for him or not, he has the power of world admiration for his use. That he belongs to us is a great stroke of good luck.

If you want proof, look what happened to us and to the world when our President was universally loathed (he had a 5% approval rating abroad; he couldn't buy cooperation and concensus with a blank check.) Everyone should be hoping only good things for this president and his much-admired wife.

This was a display of the innate affection the queen has for the obamas. If the queen could grant audience to them in an unofficial invitation only speaks to the charm and inspiration the obamas reflect in their personality. I do not think their actions were a breach of protocol in any way

I think we can learn from this honest and simple gesture. It was not planned nor pompous. They are both Queens in my book. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with this simple gesture of friendship, affection and recognition.

Someone should tell Michelle she is no longer in the gehtto and she should respect the traditions and guidlines of others.
She should also be told to cover up those arms when she is in public in a position of representing the United States of America.
If Michelle does not respect the USA or be proud of it she should go back to Chicago.

I am so proud of our President and Mrs. Obama. I have friends in
Europe and they are thrilled that a genuinely warm, friendly and brilliant Obama is our President. Can't wait to get home at night to see them on then news. Obama may not be able to solve all the problems he inherited right away, but at least there is respect for him and hopefully for American after all these years.

God save the Queen and long live President & Mrs. Obama. America has truly been blessed despite itself. History will prove this to be a crucial turning point in time for America and the entire planet. Barack is the world's president. Thank God for this man!!!!

I think it is awesome that Queen Elizabeth embraced Mrs. Obama. The fact that it was initiated by the Queen is amazing. Mrs. Obama is a lady of intelligence, style and grace and the Queen showed a softer side of the monarchy.

Michelle Obama represents the modern ideal American woman: intelligent, dillgent, self-made, confident, kind and beauitful, which is the least of her dowers. It is not suprising that such a magnetic woman would attract even the Queen of England's arm .
Having lived in Europe, I can appreciate how Michelle Obama and Mr. Michelle Obama are revolutionizing the way Europe perceives Americans. The Queen of England clearly approves too.

She's not America's queen. There is no "protocol" on how we shall treat her, because she is no different from anyone else, "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL." The Queen does not deserve special treatment, especially not from the United States; we won that war. What, do we need to pull out some cannons and tell the Brittish a second time that they do not hold sovereignty over the US? "We fired our guns and the Brittish kept a comin, there wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago, we fired once more and they began a runnin, down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico..." We do not bow to foreign Kings nor Queens.

I thought it was sweet and in this day & age, who CARES? I'm sure even the Queen didn't take it as a horrible "incident". In fact, I'm pretty sure that as an older woman it even seemed sweet to the Queen and she didn't take it as any type of disrepect.

The Queen seems pretty cool to me although as an American I know that most of us are touchy-feeling and do so especially to folks older than us as a sign of respect and genuine fondness. We don't do it to disrespect them but quite the other – because we DO respect them

For Michelle, I'm sure she, like the rest of us was bowled over by meeting the Queen and simply was herself, a sweet, caring, loving lady who appreciated the Queen's graciousness and title as well as simply being another woman.

I know she didn't mean any type of disrespect. I would have lost myself in the moment and probably hugged her or wanted to touch her on the shoulder etc because whatever her relationship with her ex-daughters-in-law were, she's always seemed like a "real" person who was a little embarrassed by the way "normal" people feel they must approach her anyway

She may be stuck in a very isolated "protocol" world, but I do think she's more human than we give her credit for....perhaps she just don't know how to show it. But this little gesture, regardless of who initiated it, makes me love her even more.

During the time of such a troubled world as we have, any positive or affectionate display must surely be appreciated. Great Britain has always been our ally and I am delighted that Queen Elizabeth chose the action she did. It signifies to me that respect (at the very least) is possible. It may surprise you to learn that unlike the USA, the United Kingdom is a parliamentary monarchy and not a democracy, and therefore Queen Elizabeth the Second is head over every citizen of the UK, to the extent that new citizens and commissioned officers are required to swear allegiance to her person and not to the state, because legally she IS the state. I just pray that neither of you ever has any connection with the US State Department.

When I saw Her Majesty and the First Lady embracing, I was shocked, and then very moved by the warmth that they both expressed. I guess that it is time for a fresh start for the world and am thrilled at the breath of fresh air that is now coming from America.

The Queen chose her moment to make a rare, deliberate gesture of affection and approval. She ~defines~ protocol at Palace events. Her staff didn't stage the moment, nor would she have made the gesture accidentally. It was her spontaneous decision, and a gracious gesture.

As for bare arms, Michelle did not dress bare-armed at the Palace. Her dress was appropriate for the dinner than Sarah Gordon hosted. The Queen herself had been photographed in a sleeveless gown with an equally sleeveless Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961.

She's quite progressive and has, I think, been Queen long enough to know her own mind as to what degree of formality or intimacy a meeting requires.

The "CHANGE" is spreading! For the better. Can we just relax, enjoy and be grateful.

Who hugged who first? Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth extended that very rare gesture to First Lady of the USA, Michelle Obama. Get over the protocol nonsense. Protocol towards her Majesty is dictated by her majesty..........did you ever hear of the time Her Majesty visited a former colony and a minister of government drank from the finger bowl? In all her graciousness and majesty, it was alleged that the Queen also drank from the finger bowl. She's been doing this job for years......she's human, full of warmth and ease. She's also the same person who will apply her lipstick at a dinner party.
So let's not get into petty discussions about the show of affection that these women displayed. Let's talk about the G20 Summit and how America is going to rise out of the ashes; how the world will feed itself tomorrow and all the atrocities like Darfur that these leaders should be addressing.

I am an Australian and as such still a member of the Commonwealth. All this uppity protocol, whatever you think of it, is only required from other Heads of State who ARE members of the Commonwealth. The USA is NOT a member of the Commonwealth. I see nothing disrespectful at all and the Queen seemed quite touched IMHO.

Michelle, of course, is the assumptive Queen of the World therefor she does as she pleases. What else can we expect from one who is campaigning for King of the World (or General Secretary of the Pelosi, Reid, Obama Politburo may be more to the point).

It was a sweet moment, leave it at that.

What this shows me is the Queen reaching out to the new person in the room. I am sure she can reflect when she became queen at her young tender age. And I am sure she wanted Mrs. Obama to feel welcomed into the group. Or perhaps the Queen since the death of Diana has learned that a simple touch is the right thing to do. I am also sure that Mrs. Obama being in a room full of people felt perhaps a little overwhelmed and nervous, and if the Queen did the touch to ease her I give the Queen great respect for that. We I think have seen a change in the Queen that should be appaluded and accepted, that perhaps in the wake of Diana's death she can allow herself to show that Diana did have an impact on the Royal Family! Good Show Elizabeth!

I'm guessing that the queen showed more affection than normal because everyone stays away from her because she is "sacred." I laugh at Europe that they took this small affection completely out of proportion. I am glad that the First Lady has such warmth to others. I believe that it is very important, especially connecting to other countries. Again, I am glad that something like this happened. Especially that the U.S. is not very like in much of the world. I'm sorry to read that many of you non-British people don't understand the concept of "sacred". The Queen is the head of state and as such on state occassions represents the country, not a policial movement or a single individual. Her public life is goverened by rules of precedent; these rules are historic (often many centuries old) and, yes, some of them are odd and, yes, the Monarchy as an institution is slow to change (it is, by definition, Conservative).

The Queen does not make political statements or give her views or give interviews, period. The only way you have of knowing what she actually thinks, when in the public sphere, is by watching for these mannerisms. That is why what may appear to be somewhat trivial incidents generate so much interest.

So is this an international incident? Will the redcoats be invading soon?

Michelle Obama is a very good example in the world. I like the way the queen received the obama couple, she was just natural.

I don't know why CNN is so interested in protocol involving the Queen of the United Kingdom. As President of the United States, Mr. Obama is an equal of the Queen and owes her courtesy as a host and as someone who has been a head of state longer than himself. But, unlike Mr. Keating, who was Her Majesty's Prime Minister for Australia, he is not a subject and therefore is not subject to the same protocol. Neither is Mrs. Obama. However, anyone else who is a guest, such as the US ambassador, would be expected to follow protocol.

It, most certainly, is not a breech of protocol in America, or against the White House. Every true American I have ever met will welcome almost anyone into their homes, give a great big hug and share what ever we can with our guests. We are a country built upon emotion. Choosing freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to give anyone a hug who needs it!

If Her Majesty had a problem with it I am sure her 'displeasure' would have been evident. Perhaps for once we should just take the episode for what it is a quasi-social event that everyone will talk about for oh, say 10 minutes. I am an Anglophile who spent some time in the UK and have a degree in British history, so I am familiar with the protocols regarding royalty – and I would never have expected this. I am so proud of both the Queen and Michelle Obama. One gets the feeling that the Queen is very isolated simply because of the nature of her position and the way she was raised. Mrs. Obama carries herself with such natural strength and easy authority that she is clearly a queen in her own way. The two are very different, but I think they have some very profound values in common. Long live the Queen and the First Lady!

I am glad to see that the Queen of England has extraordinary taste in people. Michelle Obama is now one of the most powerful and brilliant women on the world scene. It is good to have her in good graces with the Queen.

How wonderful! What a welcome relief to read about hugs instead of bombing. I am so proud of our new President and First Lady and it's delightful to see the kindness and warmth between the Queen and the Michelle Obama. The world needs more of this.

Ok, so it was a breech of royal tradition, but it was not an embrace either. It was similar to getting close for a photo, or leaning in to speak to someone. We are all becoming less formal these days, apparently even the queen. It clearly wasn't a big deal for anyone involved, so why is it for everyone else? Get over it.

Well, the word may be inappopriate, but the point I think is still well taken.

Her Majesty represents, in her person, the whole of the United Kingdom. It's a duty that she has served for many years.

Barack and Michelle Obama will be private citizens again one day, and the Queen will never be. They are therefore allowed to act personable the way a private citizen can.

Remember, the queen can't even vote, while all her subjects can.

Therefore it is sensible that she, as head-of-state of the United Kingdom until she dies, is treated with a certain... reverence is the only word I can come up with.

For those of you who took umbrage at the word "sacred" being appled to Queen Elizabeth II as a person... I have to say that I respect your sense of reserving holy descriptions for things which you find holy.

And that being the case, perhaps you can appreciate what I mean when I say that we Americans might be well-served to be more reflective on the things we hold dear and the things we revere. What with the recession and all, this is a perfect time for us to think about what is important to us; and to treat them like they are important.

The customary formality and respect paid to the Queen... I bet we could do with treating things in our lives and communities with more respect ourselves.

I don't think this was a display of latent touchy feelyness on the Queen's part. I honestly think that she was just trying to move Mrs. Obama to a better position for a camera or something. She was trying to direct Michelle more than anything, and Michelle perhaps misunderstood. Of course, the Palace isn't going to smack up the First Lady at the first meeting, it wasn't all that big of deal!

Michelle Obama absolutely rocks! She is classy, down-to-earth, educated but not elitist, warm, incredibly genuine, and an absolutely stellar role model for all women/mothers/wives of every color. and creed And this experience is proof positive. For the very reserved Queen Elizabeth to do something so out of character for her just shows how she sees our First Lady. Michelle Obama makes me more proud than ever to be an American woman. The whole article just warms my heart. I'm so thrilled to finally be able to proud of my President. And his choice of such an amazing woman to be his wife is just the indescribably wonderful frosting on the whole cake.

A display of affection, we are all human and no human is above another.

To a certain extent the Queen is 'sacred' to the British people, she represents the country and is therefore the subject of the national anthem ('God save the Queen') which is sung with great pride at many international and national sporting events, for example.
She has done so much for the country during her long reign, for example she has promoted the country around the world to the extent that she is one of the most recognized faces in the world.

It is, therefore, expected that there are certain protocols in place for the British to honor and respect the Monarch and it would only be nice if people from other countries also respected the British culture as the British should respect the cultures of others.

However I feel it is great that the Queen herself can show this sort of affection to Mrs Obama who, with the president, is doing a great job building a good reputation around the world for the US.

Mrs Obama had publicly acknowledged that she was nervous at the prospect of meeting the Queen. The Queen’s embrace may well have been a gesture aimed at comforting the First Lady in an apprehensive moment. It may also have been a heartfelt expression of affection for someone apparently untainted by artifice and affectation.

President and Mrs Obama appear to be genuine and charismatic in equal measure – rare qualities indeed in the world of international politics. I’m not sure if US television viewers were shown the rapturous – ecstatic, even – reception which London schoolgirls gave to Mrs Obama when she came to talk at their school yesterday. It was as if the girls’ favourite boy band (if boy bands still exist) had just walked onto the stage.

I mean no disrespect to your political system, but I, and most of the UK, rather like having a head of state that is not a politican. The Queen is universally admired throughout the world, among leaders including yours for her dignity and devotion to duty. Part of that role involves being a beacon of stability which in times of dramatic change can seem outdated, stuffy and out of touch. She however is not and has always, with perhaps the one glaring exception, read the Brits very well. It is very unlikely there was any offence given or taken on either side. God bless the Queen, the Obamas and our respective nations

The Queen can amend the "protocol" whenever and however she darn well pleases. Live with it. And who but a retrograde ismalist would give a hoot about bare arms?

Hard to believe people are still racist what a waste of energy. I am a supporter of Barack (oh and if you are going to bag on him you should spell his name correctly) I don't remember feeling any negative feelings to Laura Bush, maybe that is because she is a democrat. Point being if you do not like his Politics that is one thing but don;t embarrass yourself with personal attacks. What a waste of time. Go out and do some community service with that energy.

Hey the Queen is a person too. If you read anyting about her she is much more the kindly old grandmother type than the staunch monarch the media wants you to believe. Plus she is like 90 years old now. Cut these women a break. I'm proud that she felt comfortable enough to touch Michelle in a friendly and kindly way. You go Lizzy! You go too Michelle!

Just a personal observation...the comments of two earlier posters – Robinson- and – Ian from the UK – seemed particularly insightful and balanced. They seem to clarify things that some people are, strangely, getting thier knickers in a twist over.

Nonetheless, it was lovely to see two such amazing, strong, and intelligent women from two very different generations interacting so warmly. It speaks volumes about both of them. I am sure our First Lady was thrilled beyond words at meeting such a venerable monarch as Queen Elizabeth. Long live the Queen! Long live the Obamas!

I think both MIchelle Obama and the queen are twoo very gracious people and they extended their graciousness to each other. This is something the world needs more of. Congratualtions to Michelle for being her kind self and not letting "protocol" get in the way.

How beautiful was that? Even the most reserved know that there is something "Real" about President and Michelle Obama.

Personally, I think it was sweet. And anyway, I don't see what's the big deal. It's not like it's the first time it happened. Google Louis Garneau and Queen Elizabeth for a 2001 picture of the Quebecois bicycle clothing manufacturer with his arm around the Queen's shoulder and everybody's smiling. He makes excellent gear as well.
